Acai berry is a fruit that has one of the highest levels of antioxidants. It is known to be one of the top antioxidant foods. It has been found to have higher antioxidants than blueberry.

Schauss AG, et al, found that acai has the most effective antioxidant against superoxide of any analyzed food. It was also found to have anti-inflammatory effects without compromising the immune system.

You may ask, “What is antioxidant?”

Antioxidants prevent the oxidation by free radicals in the body. Oxidation by free radicals in the body can result in the formation of unwanted materials in the body. As such, antioxidants protect the tissues and also prevent cancer formation.

In other words, free radicals force materials in the body to become something else, and antioxidants stop them from this destruction activities.

 Hyperglycemia or high blood sugar increases the oxidation of glucose into free radicals in the body. These free radicals damage the organs and contribute to diabetes complications, including damage to blood vessels. Up to 75% of diabetics die from diseases that have to do with blood vessels. These include stroke, heart attack, kidney damage and nerve damage.

According to Bajaj and Khan, 2012, this berry juice has an exceptionally high content of antioxidants, and can be beneficial to diabetics in the prevention of complications that would result from the presence of those free radicals in the body.

The stress brought about by free radicals may damage the beta cells of the pancreas that make insulin. This stress may also contribute to insulin resistance. It is supposed that a diet rich in antioxidants will prevent the diabetes complications brought about by the presence of the free radicals.

 

Acai therefore, may be beneficial to diabetics. It does not seem to prevent high blood glucose, but it can help prevent diabetes complications that result because of hyperglycemia.
